North South Corridor Conference Lusaka 6 & 7 April
Posted Feb 23, 2009
The North-South Corridor Pilot Aid for Trade Programme is a joint COMESA-EAC-SADC initiative. Its aim is to reduce the time, and so the costs, of road and rail transport along the Corridor which, with its spurs, services eight countries – Tanzania, DR Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa.
The objectives of the conference are to:
- Provide high-level support for implementing the Communiqué decision made at the Tripartite COMESA-EAC-SADC Heads of State meeting on 22nd October 2008 to create a COMESA-EAC-SADC Free Trade Area and harmonise infrastructure plans across these three regions;
- Secure donor, IFI and private sector Aid-for-Trade to finance the removal of infrastructure constraints that hamper progress in realising more trade, higher economic growth and faster poverty reduction especially along the North-South Corridor; and
- Secure commitments from the members of the three Regional Organisations to address regulatory and administrative constraints blocking expansion of regional trade and economic growth.
Further information about the Conference, as well as online registration, may be obtained from the conference website on www.northsouthcorridor.org Some background information on the North south corridor is also available on the RTFP website - see Aid for Trade
